On Wednesday, Nov. 20 the boys varsity basketball team had their first scrimmage against Homestead High School.
Given the nature of the scrimmage the score reset after every quarter. Though Sequoia failed to come out on top in the first quarter, they picked up speed in the later portion of the game and won the next three quarters. This first scrimmage was an outcome of preseason training since September. The majority of the team is new to varsity and the squad is still not full due to the extended football season as a result of the CCS playoffs.
“I am very optimistic for this season. We have a lot of good players and when we start playing with each other more throughout the season, we are going to be a team no one wants to face,” Jack Kempton, senior varsity player, said.
With this game marking the beginning of the basketball season, the team was able to reflect on the progress that has been made since last season.
“There’s so much that we need to work on […], but we’ve come a long way and with more practice, we [will certainly be great],” Fine Lauesevarsity basketball coach said.
This year provides a new start to the team and with a scrimmage, the team is able to see what has improved since last year.
“As a coach, I’m happy with what I saw coming back after last year’s team by the end of August, I was really happy with the effort that was put in by every single player,” Lauese said.
