On Friday, November 8th, Sequoia faced Carlmont for a cross-town classic game and a battle for the Terremere Trophy. This game marked the end of the regular season for the team and honored the football and cheer seniors for their Senior Night celebration. Despite the loss, the Ravens will continue their season to CCS playoffs in the coming week.
The game started off strong for Carlmont, as the Scots scored a touchdown in the opening drive of the game and went on to score again the following drive. This gave them momentum for a 27-17 win over the Ravens.
Sequoia was left scoreless at the half, trailing by 20. They came back to start the second half, with Jordan Crockett, senior running back making his way for a rushing touchdown in the mid-third quarter. The Ravens were held to a field goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter, and later, Crockett ran it down the line for another Sequoia touchdown.
Crockett had a total of two touchdowns and 186 total yards Friday night. He shared his thoughts on the game.
“I just think our only issue was that we need to have more confidence in our receivers. Besides that, I think overall, everything went well. Our defense was clicking, but we just got to capitalize it more,” Crockett said.
Head coach Frank Mems felt the loss served as a learning lesson as the team moves into playoffs.
“We’ve been on a high horse for five weeks and we knew that this was going to be a tough game […] I think [it serves as] a good reminder to the kids that we’re not invincible, that we have to come and we have to put in work every day,” Mems said.
The Ravens had a rough start to the season, starting out 0-4. They went on a surge, winning five straight games before their loss to Carlmont. Mems recognizes the improvement that has been made throughout the season.
“We just stopped making mental and physical mistakes. We learned how to limit those, but tonight’s loss showed its rear head,” Mems said.
Sequoia already secured a CCS spot last week with a win over San Mateo on November 1st. With this loss, they will head into the playoffs with a record of 5-5 and seeded number four in the Division V bracket. They will face number five-seeded Gunn (10-0) this Friday at Sequoia.
