St. Patrick’s Day is a well known holiday formally in honor of St. Patrick who rid Ireland of snakes in order to make the land habitable. Now it is more commonly celebrated for Irish culture and mischievous leprechauns.
For this holiday, Sequoia High School students set up stands coordinating with the holiday’s theme. One was set up by the CSF (California Scholarship Federation). CSF is a statewide honor roll program, the group helps to recognize students that have achieved high academic performance. Sequoia’s local chapter was responsible for the booth.
“We do volunteering, and we fundraise senior awards night, ” member Kate Dutton said. The stand helps fund initiatives that directly benefit Sequoia students.
“We’re selling St. Patrick’s Day goodie bags and cookies so that we can get enough money to buy cupcakes for senior awards night,” Dutton said. Many students gathered to support the organization while getting a sweet treat in return.
Another activity was a scavenger hunt set up by Sequoia’s ASB. Students were encouraged to find little pots filled with chocolate coins that were hidden around campus. Students teamed up to seek the hidden items.
“I went to go look for them with my friends,” freshman Samantha Segura said. The treasures were hidden in nooks and crannies all around campus. “I found the first pot next to the bomb shelter,” Segura said.
The stands and events run by Sequoia’s students allowed students to celebrate the holiday while supporting their fellow classmates.
“I really enjoyed these activities. They reminded me to celebrate St Patrick’s day” Segura said.
