On Friday, February 9, the girl’s Varsity Basketball team hosted Mills to celebrate their seven graduating seniors. The seniors led the Ravens to a 31-13 win. The girls were determined to grab this victory after falling short in a loss to rival Woodside, last week.
Last year many key seniors graduated, creating uncertainty about the upcoming season.
“We kind of knew about new challenges. We graduated a good amount last year […] It’s always a challenge to replace, but the biggest thing was that we weren’t going to replace it. We had to build a brand new identity,” head coach Josh Yee said.
After coming into this game with a 7-2 record in the Peninsula Ocean division, the girls knew this was an important game. In a hard fought game they were able to secure a victory.
“I’m most proud of the growth in everybody, mentally, physically and emotionally. Also, from the coaches. I’m just proud that we have the opportunity to see each other grow throughout all the years that I’ve been in this program,” senior captain Blessing Taimani said.
This program has come so far and many players are emotional seeing this core group of seniors move on to the next chapter. Players cite the team’s diverse set of skills as a positive part of the team.
“Everyone has their own talent and everyone has a lot to bring to the table. I feel like the seniors we have this year are just really inclusive,” junior Jill Gladstone said.
The team worked hard Friday night and left everything out on the court. The rough start to the season in December was just a small setback and the team finished out their season with a 13-10 record and first place in the Ocean division.
“This is probably the most connected team that we’ve had here at Sequoia under my staff, so all 14 girls really like each other. They’re all putting in the work to be on the court with each other and have fun with this season,” Yee said.
