If you eat lunch on Sequoia’s front lawn, then you have seen a group of students running around throwing a plastic disc. You may have even been hit in the head while peacefully eating lunch.
The Ultimate Frisbee Club is one of the newest clubs on campus; a group of friends tossing around a frisbee became an official Sequoia club for the 2023-24 year.
The Ultimate Frisbee Club used Club Day to spread the message that they are interested in growing the club and welcoming new members.
“We hope that [with] club day, people know we made this a club and that more people feel encouraged to join” said Brandon Kwan, an Ultimate Frisbee Club member.
The club has faced criticism regarding its inclusivity. Sophomore Skye Klinke noted a noticeable lack of underclassmen playing.
“It’s kind of hard to join a community when they already are all part of a community,” Klinke said.
However, the founding members of the Ultimate Frisbee Club are working to address this complaint and expand their membership.
“Our goal with the frisbee club is to hopefully get more members and possibly run more [than one] game,” said member Josiah Ferretty. “We want to be more inclusive to freshmen and sophomores.”
The club has made it their goal this year to include everyone who wants to join. You can walk right up and jump into the game.
“You don’t even need to know how to play; we’ll teach you,” Ferretty said.
Another issue the Ultimate Frisbee Club was forced to address were complaints centered around shared use of field space. For a long time, frisbee games took up a large section of the front lawn, where students previously sat during lunch. Many students reported being hit by a frisbee.
“They take up a lot of space and hit us, they should practice somewhere else until they’re good and then come back on the lawn,” junior Riya Hariharan said.
The Ultimate Frisbee Club addressed this concern by arranging to play on the gated practice field on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
The Ultimate Frisbee Club wants to make a positive contribution to campus life. Even the students who don’t wan’t to play, can spend lunch in the sun, watching a game of ultimate frisbee.
